Vote to #BanTheBan

The Board instituted a ban on taking social considerations into our investment decisions in 1991, two years after divesting from South African apartheid. This ban is cowardly and suggests that Swarthmore’s board regrets their decision to divest from apartheid. The ban has been the last leg the Board has to stand on to justify not divesting from the fossil fuel industry, which threatens our very futures due to climate change.

Sunrise is launching an all campus referendum to repeal the 1991 Ban and replace it with a holistic investment policy that takes into account both financial considerations and social objectives. Vote at bit.ly/1991ban.

Voting opens at 8:30pm on Monday, 4/16 and closes Wednesday, 4/18 at 8:30pm. Remind your friends to vote!

In a voice as carefree as the breeze blowing by us in Kohlberg Courtyard, September Sky Porras ’20 mentions, “I come from a very leftist family.” Now this isn’t a shock, especially considering the sort of students that Swarthmore tends to attract, but it’s nonetheless necessary to place Porras politically, and to understand the circumstances that created the activist sitting in front of me.
